A spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that China was maintaining close contact with Pakistan and other friendly countries in a bid to develop consensus on the UN reforms. Kong Quan told APP here that China held regular consultation with the government of Pakistan on important issues of global interest. "We are also in contact with other developing countries so as to reach broad-based consensus on the reform of the UN, including the Security Council," the spokesman added. "Pakistan and China have taken almost an identical position on the UN's reforms, making the world body more democratic and representative. Both the countries stressed that the reforms should help to enhance its ability to counter threats and challenges to international peace and security."
When asked to comment on China's position on the proposed reforms, the spokesman said that they would carefully look into the new proposals to reform United Nations. He stressed the reform process should be based on broadest consensus and not on concerns of individual countries.
"The Chinese view on UN reform is that it should be a comprehensive process. In the long-term interest of the United Nations as whole, China opposes setting an artificial timeframe for the Security Council reform and rejects forcing through a reform proposal still lacking broad consensus by means of a vote," he said.
China believed that the reform process should be characterised by democracy, in-depth consideration, patient consultation and achievement of the broadest possible consensus, spokesman added.
