German engineering company Siemens AG has won a 200 million dollar contract to improve the crowded commuter train service in India's financial capital Bombay, the company said Monday. Under the contract from state-owned Indian Railways, Siemens Transportation Systems, a unit of the German giant, will manufacture propulsion systems and electrical equipment for a new batch of trains that will run on the Bombay tracks in the next few years. "The modern equipment will help ease congestion, increase capacity and enhance comfort for passengers as the stress on Mumbai's rail infrastructure is increasing by the day," said Siemens Ltd managing director Juergen Schubert in a statement.
