The four-year experience of Local Government (LG) system proved appropriate devolution of power in many areas and the access of citizen to services like health, education and sewerage system and basic needs of live had been improved. This was stated by Chairman National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB), Danial Aziz while addressing a one-day workshop on "Media and Governance" organised by NRB with the co-operation of Communication for Effective Social Services Delivery (CESSD) and CIDA.
NRB Website on "Media and Government" with the address, of www.mng.gov.pk, was also introduced on this occasion. It has been made to help media to conduct tours of any area and prepare reports on the development projects.
Giving an over-view of the impact of first four-year term of LG, Chairman NRB referred to data collected by some independent organisations and government agencies and said all these reports clearly indicated that the basic needs of life had been improved during the said duration.
He said social sector services indicators showed upward trend and the people were satisfied with the improvement of basic amenities.
Danial said according to data collected from Tehsil Municipal Administration, Federal Bureau of Statistic, Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) and Social Audit (Canadian-based NGO), revenue of the Local Government had increased.
The enrolment at primary level had reached to 87 percent, access to sewerage system increased by 15 percent, water supply increased from 40 to 44 percent, access to health rose from 67 to 77 percent and access to road network improved from 82 to 96 percent.
Highlighting importance of media, he said there was still need to project the progress, problems, achievements and working of the LG institutions so that it could provide encouragement for others.
Danial Aziz replying to a question said NRB had no editorial policy to highlight any specific project and added that media was free to analyse, review and highlight the projects of Local Government.
He said Election Commission of Pakistan had already announced that the next LG elections would be started in July and completed by August.
The Chairman NRB said Local Government elections in Cantonments and Islamabad Capital Territory would also be held with other elections and added that necessary arrangements for holding election in these areas had been finalised.
