Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi has said that uplift of underdeveloped and backward areas, on priority basis, is the pivot of economic policies of his government. He was talking to Iranian Ambassador in Pakistan, Muhammad Ibrahim Taherian, here on Saturday, an official said. The CM said that huge resources have been allocated for social sector development in the province, which has resulted in poverty alleviation and provision of better educational, health and other facilities to the masses. "A number of welfare-oriented projects have been initiated in the province, which would raise the living standard of the common man, apart from generating job opportunities," he added.
He said that the reforms programme of President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has provided a strong economic foundation to the country. He said that concrete measures were being adopted for the promotion of small industries, and soft-term loans are also being provided in this regard.
He said that Iran and Pakistan have deep-rooted religious, economic, political and trade relations. Promotion of industrial, cultural and economic ties with the Muslims countries was an important feature of the policies of the present government. Hr said that there was a wide scope for trade between Iran and Pakistan in food processing and other sectors.
Pakistan and Iran have historic relations, which would further strengthen with the passage of time, he added.
