President Musharraf in an interaction with the TV channel anchorpersons on Friday said that the government was doing a lot in Balochistan by implementing various development projects in the area, which somehow are not to the liking of a few sardars. He asked them to come forward with more suggestions which could improve the lot of their tribesmen instead of opposing such development programmes and inciting the tribesmen to lawlessness.
How keen are the Sardars to educate,enlighten and improve the lot of their subjects is too well known to all. Rupees nine crores passed on earlier by the ML(Q) to one of them,ostensibly for the amelioration of the tribe, has acted as an appetiser for the others as well to gulp more such funds.
I think the government would do wise if it dealt directly with the lower echelons of the tribes and disbursed the development funds to them instead of doling them out to the Sardars. The tribesmen would certainly spend them well on schools, roads, hospitals,dispensaries, clean drinking water,agriculture and other socio-economic development programmes in their areas. Such a scheme of affairs would bring prosperity to them and also go a long way in liberating them from the hegemony of the Sardars.
