Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Nouraiz Shakoor Khan said that present was an age of information technology and youth should equip themselves with modern education to combat economic war continuing world over and put Pakistan on the road to progress. He expressed these views while addressing the annual convocation at Government College Sahiwal here on Monday.
District Nazim Rai Hassan Nawaz Khan, Executive District Officer Dr Anwar Ahmed, College Principal Professor M Shoaib Sipra, district officers, teachers, students and parents also attended the convocation.
Chaudhry Nouraiz further said the advancement in information technology has posed a serious challenge to the countries like Pakistan and that could only be met by developing IT sector. Keeping in view the importance of IT, Federal Government has allocated huge funds to establish modern Computer labs in the colleges and universities of the country, he said and added that a number of collages were being declared as sub campus of universities.
Similarly, private sector was also being given an opportunity to share with the government for education uplift, while working within the education standards set by the government, he maintained. Nouraiz said that national and international knowledge would be provided to the students of Sahiwal College for getting higher and research oriented education.
The government would give special grades to research scholars and specialists, and provide facilities to them according to world standards so that they could play their due role in national uplift, he said.
The Principal of college Professor M Shoaib Sipra, in his welcome address, recounted the achievements of the college and presented before minister various demands. He said the students of Sahiwal College had achieved marvellous results in both curricular and extra curricular activities.
He said in 2004 students Shagufta Naseer of MSc chemistry and Samina Tahir of MSc Mathematics secured second position each in the university.
Federal Minister Chaudhry Nouraiz Shakoor assured that their demands for upgradation of science lab, computer lab, library equipped with Internet facility, facilities for students to research in PCSIR Laboratories Lahore, provision of furniture and college bus would be met shortly. He said the district government had allocated 40 acres of land for COMSATS university, and its construction work would start soon. Meanwhile, classes of COMSATS would also be started at Sahiwal College.
Later, Federal Minister gave away certificates to students. The Principal of the college presented souvenirs to Federal Minister and District Nazim.
