Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Monday constituted a high level committee to review the system of Zakat in the country. The committee, to be headed by Minister for Religious Affairs Muhammad Ijazul Haq will submit its recommendations within four weeks. The decision followed a presentation made to the Prime Minister by the Ministry of Religious Affairs at the PM House.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the government was duty bound to ensure that Zakat reached the needy and the poorest of the poor across the country. He directed the committee to consult the Council of Islamic Ideology while formulating its recommendations. He added the government wanted to streamline the distribution of Zakat as it had a direct bearing on poverty alleviation and improvement of standard of living of the people.
