Japanese shipping firm Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Lines) is in talks with authorities in China's southern Guangzhou city to build a joint-venture car terminal in its Nansha port, a Hong Kong newspaper said on Tuesday.
The company will meet Guangzhou officials on Tuesday to discuss the project and hopes to reach an agreement in three to six months, the South China Morning Post quoted NYK Lines president Koji Miyahara as saying.
The proposed car terminal project may include Hong Kong-listed terminal operator COSCO Pacific Ltd as a partner, the newspaper said.
Guangzhou, one of the wealthiest cities in China, has in recent years attracted investment from Japanese car makers Honda Motor Co, Toyota Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co.
Honda, Japan's second-largest auto maker, is set to double production capacity at its Guangzhou plant to 204,000 units this year, when its export-only plant will also become operational.
