City Government is seriously considering the installation of latest digital video cameras on roads and intersections.
For this purpose and construction of control room, tenders will be floated and a company selected through a transparent process.
This was stated by City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, while chairing a meeting at Civic Centre here on Saturday.
The meeting was attended by DCO Mir Hussain Ali, DG Mass Transit, Malik Zahirul Islam, DIG Traffic Mohammed Yamin Khan, Maj Zahid Rasool (Retd), DSP Security Operation, Syed Zahid Shah and representatives of Winual Holding Company.
City Nazim said there is need for improving the city's security system and installation of cameras and setting of control room will help in monitoring the movement of vehicles used in dacoities and crimes as well as identifying the mischievous elements joining any protest demonstrations.
He said traffic system can be improved with the use of video cameras and will particularly help solve the traffic jam problem.
DIG Traffic informed that there are 1.3 million vehicles in Karachi and traffic police have installed digital cameras at two places.
He said mostly stolen vehicles are used in the commissioning of a crime and, therefore, any vehicle stolen must be immediately identified for which there is need for a modern monitoring system.
DG Mass Transit suggested that digital video recording system should be connected with computerised traffic signals in Karachi under Urban Traffic Control System so that mischievous elements within protesting people could be easily identified with the help of video cameras.
DCO Mir Hussain Ali said planning should include provision for mobile video cameras and vehicles so that real culprits could be caught with the help of recording at the affected point.
It was decided to set up a committee for installation of video cameras and setting up of control room under modern security system. It will comprise officials of Traffic Police, Crime Police, Rangers and City Government.
The City Nazim issued directive for preparation of feasibility report for installation of video recording cameras, in the first phase, at Zero Point Super Highway, Saddar, M.A. Jinnah Road, I.I. Chundrigar Road and Sharea Faisal.
He said information and statistics required for the preparation of feasibility report be obtained from DIG Traffic, DG Mass Transit and EDO Transport besides contacting the Fibre Optics companies.
