The nation's highest court of appeals opened the second judicial week of May with ten judges on the benches and two proceedings on temporary vacation.
The ten judges have been assigned to four benches - two full and two division to hear civil and criminal appeals, corporate cases, petitions relating to last general elections and some service matters.
Since December last year when a four judges, including the then Chief Justice Sheikh Riaz Ahmed retired due to reversal of a government decision to extend their tenure of service by three years, the Court's strength came down from 17 to 13.
It was further curtailed when Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi was deputed to the Federal Ministry of Law and Justice as its secretary-general.
For last four and a half months, the Supreme Court has functioned with 12 judges which on ceremonial occasions returns to 13 as Justice Abbasi dons the white-lace bordered black gown to attend the function.
The four benches that started work from Monday are:
FIRST BENCH: Chief Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui, Justice Javed Iqbal and Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar.
SECOND BENCH: Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Khalil-ur-Rahman Ramday and Justice Falak Sher.
THIRD BENCH: Justice Mian Muhammad Ajmal and Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokhar.
FOURTH BENCH: Justice Hamid Ali Khan and Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan.
