Pakistan clinched all but one of the 11 gold medals on offer, in a total domination of the boxing finals on the last day of actual competitions in the 9th SAF Games at Liaquat Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Under the rules, Pakistan had to leave open one weight category and India's Harpreet Singh won the gold medal, beating Bishno Prasad of Nepal, in this 81 kg weight class.
Pakistan's 10 gold medal winners in the respective weight classes were: Numan Karim (48), Shoaib Rashid (51), Meherullah (54), Sohail Baloch (57), Sajid Raja (60), Faisal Karim (64), Nisar Khan (69), Ahmed Ali (75), Shoukat Ali (91) and Muzaffar Iqbal (over-91).
Pakistan thus finished with 42 gold medals on the overall medals table, winning two athletics and one men's team event squash gold in addition to completely dominating the boxing action on Tuesday with closing ceremony to be held or Wednesday.
Pakistani pugilists opponents and respective scores in the 10 bouts were: Numan Karim vs Harsha Kumara of Sri Lanka (25-13), Shoaib Rashid vs M. Rathnaika of Sri Lanka (37-21), Meherullah vs Wanniarachchi of Sri Lanka (26-11), Sohail Baloch vs Kamal Sameera of Sri Lanka (26-6), Sajid Raja vs Jai Bhagwan of India (19-12), Faisal Karim vs Vigender of India (21-8), Nisar Khan vs Dilbagh Singh of India, (48-36), Ahmed Ali vs Bikash of Nepal (Referee stops contest), Shoukat Ali vs V. Johnson of India (29-7) and Muzaffar Iqbal vs Harpal Singh.
Pakistan equalled its record of winning 10 gold set in 4th SAF Games also held at Islamabad in 1989.
Asian Games gold-medallist and Olympics qualifier, Meherullah, was declared the best pugilist of the SAF Games as Pakistanis disposed of all their five opponents of the finals in addition to Sri Lankans and Nepalese.
Pakistan's gold medal rush in this edition was a far cry from the three golds, as against India's six, in 8th SAF Games at Kathmandu in September, 1999.
TT GOLD: India is the only team which had won all TT events in last SAF Games held in Nepal.
In the 9th SAF Games besides Pakistan, the Nepalese and Sri Lankan players failed to get a single gold in any of the TT event.
The men and women TT singles' title for India was won by Soumyadeep Roy and Mouma Das, respectively.
The final for men's single title was played between the Indian players in which Soumyadeep Roy defeated Indian TT national Champion Achanta Sharath Kamal by 4-3.
In this event Pakistan and Sri Lanka got the bronze medal.
Mouma Das of India landed the women's singles TT title by defeating Indian Poulomt Ghatak by 4-3. Silver medal also went to India.
In men's and women's doubles, the Indian players remained dominant and got both gold medals. The 'final of both events were played between the Indian players.
In the men's doubles' final, Achanta Sharath Kamai and Soumy Adeep Roy defeated Subha jit Saha and Ranabir Das by 3-1 while in the women's final, Mouma Das and Vishakha Vijay won the match against Ghatak and Mantu Ghosh by 3-2.
Similarly, India won the gold medal in table tennis mixed doubles. The silver medal was also won by Indian players.
Nepal won the bronze medal in the event.
The final was played between Indian players Soumyadeep Roy and Mantu Ghosh with Achanta Sharath Kamal and Vishakha Vijay which was won by Achanta Sharath and Vishakha Vijay by 3-1.
After defeating Pakistan 3-0, India also got the gold medal in the men's team event. Pakistan had to be content with a silver medal
Sri Lanka and Nepal got the bronze medal.
In the final of team event, the first match which was played between Indian player Achanta Sharath Kamal and Pakistani Farjad Saif was won by India by 3-0.
In the second match Indian Soumyadeep Roy won his match by defeating Pakistani Asim Qureshi by 3-0. In the third match Subhajit Saha defeated Kashif Razzaq Sheikh by 3-0.
India also got gold medal in IT Women's team event while Pakistan got silver medal in the event.
