Anti Terrorism Court (ATC-III), headed by Judge Arshad Noor Khan, on Monday sentenced an accused Zulfiqar to death and to a total prison term of 17 years in US Consulate firing case in which two police officials were killed, several others including officers of police and Rangers sustained fire arm injuries.
The judge, announcing the judgement, declared the accused as sane person rejecting his (accused) plea of mental disorder.
The court held him guilty of attacking the police officers posted at US Consulate Karachi with the intention of killing them.
According to details, on February 28, 2003 accused snatched an automatic weapon from a policemen on duty in Bagh-e-Jinnah (Frere Hall). He then fled and came towards police picket outside US Consulate and resorted to indiscriminate firing killing two police officials and injuring others.
The accused was challaned before the ATC. At trial, accused took plea of insanity and being lunatic and was put to medical examination which reported in negative.
The judgement was earlier reserved and announced on Monday. The ATC judge sentenced him to death on two counts of murder. He was also fined for Rs 200,000.
He was also awarded a ten-year term and a fine of Rs 100,000 on charge of attempted murder, seven years for snatching arms besides a fine of Rs 50,000 and another two-year term and a fine of Rs 25,000 on charge of interfering with the official duty of policemen.
The accused was however acquitted of charges of keeping weapons illegally (13 D of Arms Ordinance).
