Ukraine's white sugar output rose to 2,345,433 tonnes in 2003 compared with 1,621,138 tonnes in 2002, the government said on Tuesday.
Ukraine's state food industry department said in a statement the overall volume had included 887,665 tonnes of white sugar made from raw cane.
The country made 193,470 tonnes of white sugar from raw cane sugar in 2002.
Analysts said the increase in output was due to large raw cane sugar imports after a white sugar production fell in 2002 and was also low in 2003.
In a bid to cover sugar shortages this year the parliament allowed imports of 560,000 tonnes of raw sugar at a duty of 59 and 60 euros per tonne between May and September.
In July and August Ukraine sold 380,000 tonnes of raw sugar import quotas.
Ukraine produced 1.42 million tonnes of sugar from beet in 2002 and 1.45 million in 2003 while the country of 48 million people needs about two million tonnes of white sugar to meet domestic demand.
Ukraine produced 1.65 million tonnes of beet sugar in 2001.
