The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) has expressed dismay over the functioning of 21 technical institutes, set up by various exporters associations at a cost of two billion rupees provided from the Export Development Marketing Fund.
Addressing the award distribution ceremony, organised by Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Plgmea) under Korean training project on Monday, the EPB Chairman, Tariq Ikram, said that the Bureau would carry out audit of these institutes and arrange close monitoring of their functioning to improve their productivity.
He said that some institutes lacked modern training equipment, while others suffered from competent faculty.
Tariq lauded the Plgmea's efforts in engaging services of Korean leather experts to train the leather garment factory workers in modern production techniques.
The Plgmea Chairman, Fawad Ijaz Khan, briefed the audience about this project.
He also presented a handbook of latest leather garments production techniques learnt from the Korean technicians to Tariq Ikram. He appreciated the EPB support for making the project possible.
The leather garment exports during July-December 2003 were 190.5 million dollars, which was 54 percent higher than the exports made during the same period last year.
The main aim of the project was to upgrade the production skills of the leather sector to produce quality products on competitive prices.
Korean technicians were invited because they were considered the best craftsmen in leather garment technology, the Plgmea chief said, adding the training of leather industry workers was carried out in leather factories in Sialkot, Lahore and Karachi. Nineteen Plgmea members participated in the project.
Fawad expressed the hope that such project should be undertaken on a regular basis to keep the industry abreast with latest production techniques and skills.
He also suggested that such training projects could be linked with the National Institute of Leather Technology (Nilat) to make training a regular feature of the industry.
