imageIt just took one mosquito bite, for a man to be infected by one of the most dreaded disease known in the tropics ‘Elephantiasis.’

A man from Brazil, named Raimundo is the unfortunate soul suffering from this disease for the past twenty years. The man was bitten two decades back and was subsequently infected with Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as Elephantiasis, which is the parasite that causes the condition.

imageAccording to the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. The infection often occurs in childhood but symptoms aren’t displayed until adulthood.

It is caused by parasites that enter the body and migrate to lymphatic vessels, where they become adult worms. The swelling occurred is generally a result of skin infection caused made likely due to lymphatic damage. The swelled up body parts resemble that of an elephant.

According to Daily Mail, Raimundo is currently undergoing treatment in Sao Jose Rio Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The clinic which is treating him has fortunately been successful in managing the disease, as the size of swelling has reduced drastically, in a matter of weeks.
