imagePakistan talented Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed has been appointed as Pakistan’s new Twenty20 captain. The decision was made after Shahid Afridi stepped down as Pakistan’s T20 captain.

According to local media reports, “I spoke to Sarfraz this morning and conveyed to him that he was our natural choice for this position," Shahryar Khan, the PCB chairman, said. "His appointment is open-ended. I wish him good luck in his new role."

Last year, Sarfraz was appointed as vice-captain of One-day International and Twenty20 teams. He takes over the captaincy of the shortest form of the game from Shahid Afridi whose term as captain came to an end after the ICC World Twenty20 2016 in India where Pakistan team couldn’t perform well and had to leave early in group stages. Afridi faced harsh criticism after his team lost three of their four games in the WT20, failing to reach the semi-finals.

During the first edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL), Sarfraz Ahmed led ‘Quetta Gladiators’ to final but his team was defeated by Islamabad United.

Afridi stepped down from T20 captaincy following his side’s dismal show in the 2016 World Twenty20 in India. The green shirts only managed to beat Bangladesh in the tournament but lost to India, New Zealand and Australia in the mega event.
