imageUNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council will vote on Thursday on a French-drafted resolution aimed at ending the deadly violence in Burundi, diplomats said.

The council will meet around midday (1700 GMT) to decide on the measure that condemns the violence and threatens sanctions against Burundian leaders who incite attacks.

Burundi has been rocked by killings, torture and illegal detentions since President Pierre Nkurunziza launched a controversial bid to prolong his term in office in April.

At least 240 people have been killed and more than 200,000 Burundians have fled the country.
