ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Thursday stayed the proposed housing society on National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) land and directed the respondents to submit their replies within 10 days.
The three-member SC bench headed by Chief Jsutice Jawwad S. Khawaja comprising Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Qazi Faez Isa heard the case filed by Altaf Sheikh against the proposed housing society on the NARC land.
During the course of proceedings, petitioner Altaf Sheikh informed the court that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman had forwarded a summary through Cabinet Secretariat to the Prime Minister seeking approval for a housing society on the NARC land.
He said that the NARC conducted research on agriculture in collaboration with international organizations.
The CDA's counsel told the bench that the Authority had leased out 1395 acre land to the NARC for a period of 30 years. The lease had expired in 2005.
The Chief Justice remarked that the land was not CDA's inherited property."If someone wants to build a palace then he should buy land for that purpose from open market."
The court directed the government not to approve the summary till next hearing and issued notices to the respondents.
The case was adjourned till September 16.
