imageKARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has approved Rs 160 million grant-in-aid for Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to supply water through 1000 tankers to the areas facing acute water shortage in the city.

The decision was taken at a meeting held here on Thursday to discuss water shortage issue in Karachi and find out its solutions.

The meeting chaired by the Chief Minister was attended by Minister for Information and Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon, Chief Secretary M. Siddiq Memon, Additional Chief Secretary M. Waseem, Secretary Finance Sohail Rajput, Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqui, MD Water Board Hashim Raza Zaidi, Director Technical Pak Oasis and other officers.

The MD KWSB in his presentation said that there was a shortage of 500 million gallon water daily. "This issue would be solved after completion of Rs 25 billion K-4 water supply schemes. He said that presently the worst affected areas were Baldia, Orangi, North Karachi, Surjani, Manghopir and some other localities.

The Chief Minister said that he would lay the foundation stone of K-4 mega water project next month and would personally request the Prime Minister to order the Federal Government for release of a matching grant to complete the project within shortest possible time.

The Minister for Local Government said that the short term solution was to provide water to the affected areas through 200 water tanker daily and "I have started this exercise and it is providing relief to some extent," he said.

The Chief Minister ordered release of Rs 160 million for water supply through tankers to the people.

He also directed to arrange repair of pumps of Dhabeji station and other areas within four days for which Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqui and MD Water Board were assigned the task.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqui told the Chief Minister that a mechanism for judicious distribution of water through tankers in the affected areas is being evolved in coordination with MD KWSB.

Technical Director, Pak Oasis, Saeed briefed the meeting about the functioning of RO plants.
