imageLAHORE: The federal government on Friday told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that no permits would be issued for hunting of houbara bustards in the country.

On behalf of the Foreign Ministry, Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Mian Irfan gave the assurace in this regard before Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza, who was hearing a petition filed by Naeem Sadiq, challenging 33 special permits issued to royals and senior officials from the Gulf to hunt the protected houbara bustard.

The DAG submitted that the ministry had decided to end policy for issuance of houbara bustard hunting permits whereas the old licences were being cancelled.

On the insistence of petitioner's counsel, the court asked the DAG to submit a written assurance in thi regard by December 23.
