Lions Gate's 'The Hunger Games; Mockingjay Part 1' has topped the box office even after the third week with $21.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $257.7 million for a global come of $560.5 million.
Mockingjay; Part 1 is expected to become the second top domestic grossing movie of 2014, behind Marvel's ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, which took in a whopping $332.2 million, media reported.
According to reports, DreamWorks Animation's 'Penguins of Madagascar' stayed at No. 2 in its second weekend with 11.1 million dollars for a domestic total of 49.6 million dollars, followed by 'Horrible Bosses 2' with 8.6 million dollars.
Lions Gate is also following the footsteps of Disney, which has brought franchises including ‘The Lion King’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Tarzan’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and ‘Aladdin’ to the stage.
‘The Hunger Games’ stars Jennifer Lawrence along with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julianne Moore. The Hunger Games; Mockingjay Part 1 gobbled up another victory at the box office after its initial release on November 21.
