imageISLAMABAD: Minister for Ports and Shipping Kamran Michael on Tuesday informed National Assembly that future appointments in Karachi Port Trust will be made strictly on merit and keeping in view the provincial quota.

Answering a Calling Attention Notice, the minister said, as per the government policy priority will be given to kids of those employees who expired during service or were completely disabled.

MNAs Sahibzada Tariqullah, Sher Akbar Khan, Sahibzada Muhammad Ayub and Aisha Syed had drawn the attention of Minister for Ports and Shipping towards non-restoration of son quota for employment.

The members had also pointed out towards protest by such employees kids who were facing employment problems in this regard.

The minister clarified that there is clear policy about the kids of deceased employees while for the kids of those who are in service a clear merit policy will be observed.

He said in the past only Karachi was considered for employments in Karachi Port Trust and proper procedure was not adopted. ?While under the constitution and the laid down procedure, employment in any department was right of every Pakistani. We are investigating those irregularities and illegal appointment will be dealt with accordingly.

He said on son quota only those applicants can apply whose father or mother had died during service and there are clear directives on this matter. However, he said, there is no provision to appoint anybody on son quota while any of the parent is alive and serving.

He also assured that quota system will be observed during upcoming jobs in KPT and he will himself monitor the recruitment process to ensure transparency, quota and merit.

Kamran Michael said, the Ministry and the present management of KPT is trying to address the mistake of the past where quota and merit were violated.

Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi directed the minister to also address the issue of son quota during the inquiry already conducted by the ministry.

Later, the MQM members Asif Hanain and Abdul Rasheed Godel confronted the statement of the minister and described his stated policy as biased and discriminatory towards the Karachi citizens.

But, the minister contested that merit could not be violated in appointments and there will be no discrimination in recruitment process.

He said it has already been agreed local people will be given priority in appointments in lower grades while merit will be observed in recruitments in other grades.
