imageISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Friday directed the provincial governments to invest more to prevent floods in future, to save huge money paid as compensations for losses of the flood-hit population.

"The prevention of floods must be given more attention in future. I ask the experts from Sindh and Punjab to devise coordinated strategy on prevention of floods. When flood hits, we pay compensation for losses of houses, crops and cattle that proves costlier," the Prime Minister commented in a briefing given to him during his visit to Sukkur Barrage to examine relief operation there.

He said the protection of lives and properties was foremost priority of the government.

The Prime Minister said the people of Sindh must be thankful to Allah Almighty for being safe from feared magnitude of flood that could have caused huge destruction.

Chief Secretary Sindh Sajjad Saleem Hotiana and Secretary Irrigation Babar Hussain Effendi briefed the Prime Minister on the flood situation, losses of houses, crops and cattle caused by floods and the ongoing relief activities.

Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah was also present on the occasion.

Secretary Irrigation Sindh Babar Hussain Effendi apprised the Prime Minister that the flood has affected 87,585 people, 29300 cattle and inundated 146,625 acres of land in Sindh.

He said the flood has hit around 251 villages of Katcha area and the affected people have been provided with 800 camps.

It was told that 15 relief camps have been established housing around 21,300 flood-hit people.

Effendi said that 23,920 people have been shifted to safe locations besides establishing medical camps for flood-affected population.
