mangoesISLAMABAD: The markets in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad can be seen packed with 'King of Fruits', mango, which enjoys second position after citrus in Pakistan.

Mango is liked by people of all ages. But unfortunately, mango prices are very high this year and no variety of mango is available below Rs50 per kilogram.

Pakistan is an important mango growing country in the world, and soil and climatic conditions here are highly suitable for mango growth.

Talking to APP, a vendor in Abpara market said that mango from Pakistan is well known for its taste and quality abroad. Langra, Dusehri, Samar Behisht, Chaunsa, Anwar Ratol are famous varieties grown in Punjab. While Sindhri, Bagan Pali, Suwarneka, Neelum and Gulab Khas are leading ones from Sindh.

Mango varieties have been known for attractive colours, savouring fragrance, taste and high nutritive value.

Mango fruits contain 10-20% sugar, an important source of vitamin A, B and C. Small amount of Protein, Iron, Calcium and Phosphorus are also present.

Ripe mangoes are mainly eaten fresh, but they are also utilized in preparing squashes, jams and other preserves. Unripe mangoes are used for making pickles. Pakistan produces nearly 1.4 million tons of mango in 100 varieties.

Pakistani mangoes are usually exported to Middle East. Besides, there is also demand for it in Malaysia, Indonesia, Canada and Iran.
