LAHORE: The novel coronavirus continued to play havoc, as with 34 more fatalities and 2641 fresh cases, the total number of Covid-19 cases across the province of Punjab has reached to 43,460 and the total deaths in the province reached to 807 till the filing of this report.

As per data made available to Business Recorder, so far about 610 doctors, 226 nurses, 110 Paramedical staff and 230 other people have been affected by the virus taking the total to over 1180. Out of these 595 staff members have recovered and the overall recovery ration among healthcare workers is very good.

Lahore was the worst affected District with around 20,000 Corona patients followed by Rawalpindi with 3200 patients, Gujranwala 1777, Multan 2271 and Faisalabad 2800. The number of patients has increased manifolds due to carelessness of people and for lack of compliance with the SOPs, health professionals said.

According to the government's Covid-19 portal, the province of Punjab has confirmed 34 additional deaths from the virus, taking the total fatalities to 807.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an advisory to shopkeepers and managements of malls, asking them to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the government.

The SOPs, among others, include: sanitisation of frequently touched surfaces, allowing limited number of customers to enter shops and shopkeepers and staff must wear a mask.

In a major development, the Syndicate of University of Health Sciences (UHS) in its 58th meeting, here on Wednesday approved the allocation of free beds for corona patients in private sector teaching hospitals affiliated with the varsity.

The body was apprised that the UHS had around 40 private sector medical and dental institutions affiliated with it which had their own teaching hospitals. It was decided that in order to ease out burden on public sector health institutions in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, the administration private sector institutions would be directed to allocate 150 beds each in their respective teaching hospitals for corona patients.

It was also decided that Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC) would be approached to inspect these hospitals to assess whether or not they were equipped to treat corona patients.

The UHS VC Prof Javed Akram assured that all-out efforts would be made for the provision of free beds within next couple of days.

On the other hand, the Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue-1122) has established a 22-bed 'Corona Rescue Ward' at its academy to facilitate corona positive rescuers for their better nursing care and prevent their families and colleagues from the spread of virus.

Director General Rescue-1122, Dr Rizwan Naseer has directed Registrar Emergency Services Academy to ensure administrative arrangements including safety kits to the nursing staff responsible for corona rescue ward, proper cleanliness, disinfection, food and laundry services, and conducive environment to all corona positive rescue staff.

Expressing serious concern over the increasing number of corona patients, he emphasized to get corona test done in case of any symptoms appear to prevent your colleagues and families from the spread of this disease. He said Rescue Service is available round the clock to provide emergency response to routine, as well as Covid-19 emergencies but public, should respect smart lockdown, avoid unnecessary movement and follow instructions issued by the government to minimize the spread of virus.
