Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Muhammad Asif Monday failed to appear before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in connection with a case related to having assets beyond means. The NAB Rawalpindi had summoned former Defence Minister Asif to appear before it for recording his statement on April 1. The sources said that Asif is currently abroad and may appear before the NAB on April 4.
The NAB on August 16 last authorised an inquiry against Asif over his alleged involvement in money laundering and having assets beyond known sources of income that caused a loss of Rs 3,668.671 million to the national exchequer.
Earlier, the NAB started complaint verification against Asif in March 2018 on a complaint filed by Deputy Secretary General of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Usman Dar, who also hails from Sialkot, the hometown of Asif. Dar in his letter sent to the NAB claimed that Asif had accepted that he was also a UAE Iqama (work permit) holder and had remained involved in money laundering. The PTI leader also claimed that Asif is accused of concealing his offshore assets from the Election Commission of Pakistan.
