The unwise and careless use is depleting the earth resources and technologically advanced human resources are essential to counter the loss.
This was the dire warning sounded at the inaugural session of the training course on "Remote Sensing Technology and Geographic Information System" organised by Inter-Islamic Network on Space Science and Technology (ISNET) in collaboration with the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) at SUPARCO headquarters, Karachi, on Monday.
This training course will be held from August 1-5. Major-General Raza Hussain (Retd), president of ISNET and chairman of SUPARCO, inaugurated the training course.
Hussain informed participants that the training course was meant to share the research and development work carried out by the SUPARCO scientists and engineers in the fields of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS).
"The course will promote the use of latest technologies and applications in the field of remotes sensing and GIS," he elaborated.
Participants, who attended the course, have come from Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Libya, Sudan, Syria and Pakistan.
Hussain, while talking to Business Recorder, said that SUPARCO was working on many projects to help Pakistan's economy. "General public is unaware of our achievements although we have worked on other projects as well," Hussain further said.
He informed that SUPARCO is ready to help concerned authorities with the advance flood warning system. But the bureaucracy was not co-operating, he said.
Arshad H. Siraj, executive-director, ISNET, informed participants that SUPARCO has been involved in Satellite Remote Sensing and GIS activities for more than 3 decades.
It has developed facilities and expertise to optimally use these technologies in a variety of disciplines. These include forestry, land use land cover resource and environmental monitoring, environmental impact assessments, urban planning, disaster monitoring, land degradation, water resources, etc.
