Australian soccer officials have ordered an investigation into the cancellation of women's match after a player refused to take off her Islamic headscarf.
The referee in charge of the match in Victoria ordered one of the players, Afifa Saad, to remove a headscarf and tracksuit trousers she was wearing.
She refused, saying she had always worn the hijab in accordance with her Muslim faith.
The start of the match was postponed and, although the referee later changed his mind, it was eventually abandoned because the kick-off had been delayed by more than 15 minutes.
The Victorian Soccer Federation's referee development manager Chris Bambridge told the Australian Associated Press the federation was investigating whether the referee had breached anti-discrimination laws.
