imageKARACHI: Commissioner of Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui on Monday said "Refusals" in administration of oral polio vaccine (OPV) will simply not be tolerated in any part of the metropolis.

"Be they the parents of concerned children, community members or influential of the area -- no one will be allowed to affect our efforts towards polio eradication," he told the meeting held to review the special OPV campaign that concluded in high risk union councils of Karachi on Saturday.

The meeting attended by Town Health Officers, Deputy Commissioners, provincial health department officers and representatives of WHO and Unicef was told that against the target of two lac, three hundred and 52 children the teams could inoculate two lac, four thousand and 33 children.

The coverage rate was said to be 93% and refusals mainly came from parents' side, details of whom were duly recorded by the teams ofvaccinators, provided optimum security cover by police department.

The Karachi Commissioner said no complacency can be tolerated in protection of children against the crippling disease and therefore besides involving community members to convince parents needed action may also be taken against those refusing to be part of a national campaign, that is, Polio Free Pakistan in minimum possible time.
