image‘Furious 7' raced to the top of the box office, picking up a massive $143.6 million in its opening weekend.

According to foreign media reports, the last Furious film’s $97.4 million debut is the first film in the franchise to break the $100 million mark in the first weekend. It’s also a little less than what the first ‘Fast and Furious’ made throughout its entire domestic run back in 2001. The latest one has grossed $143.6 million in just three days.

That establishes a new high-water mark for the month of April, blowing past the $95 million debut of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, and stands as the highest-grossing kick-off for any film in the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise. It also ranks ninth among the top ten openings in history.

Production of ‘Furious 7’ was halted due to sudden death of Paul Walker while the filmmakers and Universal studios were unsure to proceed with the film but the team ultimately decided to delay the release from its originally scheduled July 2014 date. It’s now in theatres and going ‘really’ strong worldwide.

‘Furious 7’ could be one of the few modern blockbusters that stand on for more than a few weeks. ‘Furious 7’ success is that much more impressive. The film had a massive opening globally over this weekend.
