imageLONDON: Wakefield Wildcats head coach James Webster admitted his side were made to pay for sloppy defending after Scott Grix scored a hat-trick inside the opening nine minutes of Huddersfield's 44-14 victory at Belle Vue.

Full-back Grix got the visitors off to the perfect start with his quickfire treble, the 30-year-old's third a stunning solo effort from 80 metres.

Wakefield fought back with Dean Collis and Danny Kirmond efforts, coupled with Jordan Crowther's converted try just after half-time, reducing the deficit to 18-14.

But second-half tries from Brett Ferres, Danny Brough, Leroy Cudjoe and Ukuma Ta'ai eased any Giants nerves, and Wakefield's fourth successive loss left them bottom of the Super League table.

"Until we get the basics right we'll find it hard against the bigger and better teams than us," said former Parramatta Eel Webster.

"We somehow got back to 18-14 and we were doing all right, but to throw the ball away like we did, it's not up to standard.

"We need to have a look at ourselves and decide what we want to do.

"We had a strong enough team out there to be more competitive, and to hand them points is not good enough."
