imageISLAMABAD: Renowned poet and writer Faiz Ahmed Faiz waged a war through pen against extremism, inhumanity and social injustice and highlighted the issues of oppressed class.

This was stated by the speakers here on Thursday at a conference organized by the Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) to celebrate the 104th birthday of the legend poet and writer.

The conference was presided over by Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, while Minister Counselor for Public Affairs Embassy of the United States of America Thomas M. Leary was the chief guest.

Chairman PAL Qasim Bogio, Chairman Majlis-e-Faiz Ahmed Faiz Malik Muhammad Iqbal, Educationist Prof Sameena Yasmeen, Dr Ghazanfar Mehdi and other intellectuals, poets and writers also attended the conference and paid tribute to late Faiz.

They shared some pleasant memories with Faiz Ahmed Faiz and described how he faced problems in his life particularly during the Ziaul Haq regime.

Addressing the participants, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan expressed his deep devotion with Faiz, declaring the legend a great advocate for the world peace.

He said Faiz always emphasized the need for creating political awareness among the people and struggled for the same. Due to his tireless struggle for downtrodden segments of the society, Faiz had to face exile and jail, he added.

He said Faiz's literary and poetic material reflect his love and attachment with the country.

Nishan-e-Imtiaz recipient Faiz Ahmad Faiz, born on February 13, 1911, had died on November 20, 1984.
