imageMULTAN: Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq Tuesday directed officials to further improve facilities at the cantonment railway station with special focus on restoration of cultural colour and heritage of Multan.

The minister made these observations during an inspection of the Multan cantonment railway station during which he minutely checked every section including waiting rooms, platforms, ticket counters and canteen.

All old articles and designs that are part of the old building's architectural plan and face especially 'Kashikari' i.e the floral designs in blue, should be restored to their original design, the minister said while looking at a rare big easy-chair.

He directed the officials to collect such chairs from scrap and repair them to original shape as they were unique chairs in railway.

The minister also visited the roof-top of the railway station and asked officials to consult engineers to evaluate the strength of the old building to explore chances for establishment of a cafeteria on it. He said, he wanted to transform railway stations into lively places to match the standards of facilities in other countries.

He disclosed plans to establish play lands, joy land, shopping arcades near railway stations and asked officials to consult engineers in this regard..

Khawaja Saad Rafique asked the officials to replace the existing chairs at platforms with comfortable chairs for the convenience of passengers.

Saad Rafique also ordered the officials to ensure display of price lists and menu at visible places at food stalls and extend sheds to facilitate passengers.

He also met with passengers and said that an SMS service would be launched to inform commuters about timings of trains.
