The French Embassy put on display the contemporary artwork by a Pakistani artist, Xandria Noir, here at embassy premises on Thursday.

The exhibition of painting of the contemporary art by a Karachi born Xandria Noir was formerly opened by French Ambassador to Pakistan Marc Barety. In his address, Ambassador Barety appreciated the artwork, saying that the artist has presented her social experience through the work.

Noir, in her address, thanked the French Embassy and the ambassador for providing the opportunity to display her work at the premises of the embassy.

Members of the diplomatic corps, Pakistani artists and media persons were present on the occasion.

Xandria Noir is a self-taught contemporary artist from Pakistan. She was born in 1972 in Karachi. She works in multi-form of art from painting, new media, drawing, video art to photography. She holds bachelors in social sciences degree from Karachi University and a Certificate in 3D animation from Arena Graphics.

Her earlier work (1993-2005) practised semi-minimalist representational forms inclusive of abstract figures, landscapes and calligraphy on wood, canvas, paper and pottery but when she resumed to attend her canvases after an eight-year long gap, her work presented large-scale canvases emphasizing on bold black strokes in conjunction with bright colors. Soon her work evolved into minimalist art reflecting her personality and pursuit of peace from her emotional suffering and traumas.

Xandria works within several disciplines, varying from photography to abstract art, from film to mixed media. Each project is based on the in depth exploration of one idea, executed with meticulous precision. Her current practice consists of minimalist paintings in acrylic, installations, ink on paper and giclèe prints in new and mixed media, photography and video art. Some of her works from between 2013 and 2014 were inspired by works of Robert Motherwell, Clyfford Still, Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock.

In her work, light and lines of different dimensions freely inhabit weightless spaces displayed to the delight of the observers. Each will aim to antagonize, upset, frustrate and/or agitate the viewer through different anti-social strategies. Whether articulated in painting, photograph, print or video, Xandria's work attempts to create composite bodies that defy superficial boundaries.

These works attempt to create composite forms that are seemingly alien, but uncannily human; forms that repels and attract.

The psychological boundaries of the body of her work are tied to temptation, sin, guilt, purification, and redemption. Her practice constantly straddle the boundaries between analogue and digital, document versus art work, personal versus impersonal, video versus composed image and failure versus success in order to explore the dichotomies and contradictions at play.
