Apple patents facial recognition tech to unlock cars

Apple has patented a new biometric unlock feature for cars, including a facial recognition system that will recognize the owner as they approach and unlock the car for them.

Seems like unlocking car with keys or smartphones would soon go out-of-date as tech giant Apple published a patent to obtain rights to a facial recognition system that would let the car recognize the registered person as they approach. This will then let the car unlock doors itself.

The patent called ‘System and Method for Vehicle Authorization’ detailed mobile biometric authentication technology that could make use of Face ID to secure cars.

This could in fact pave way for separate ‘user accounts’ on a vehicle, with individual music settings, seat positions and climate control, all initiated automatically as the driver approaches the car, reported Engadget.

However, since the idea is still limited to a patent form, it is for us to see if Apple brings the tech to reality in future cars.
