SC directs Punjab Govt to form new JIT in Model Town case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has disposed of the suo motu notice in Model Town incident by directing Punjab Government to constitute a new JIT in the case.

A five-member larger bench of the Apex Court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar was hearing the case on the petition to form new JIT in Model Town case.

In his remarks, the Chief Justice said Punjab government has made its stance clear that it will form a new JIT under Section 19 of the Anti-Terrorism law.

Leader of Pakistan Awami Tehreek Dr. Tahir ul Qadri also appeared before the Supreme Court and gave his arguments. Later, talking to media, he said the Apex Court has raised new hopes with its decision.

He said the verdict has brought happiness on the faces of victims.

Some 14 persons were killed and over 100 injured in a police action against Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers in Lahore's Model Town area during an 'anti-encroachment operation' on June 17, 2014.
