ISLAMABAD: A report on the 2012 crash of Bhoja Aircraft Monday revealed to the Supreme Court that the airline had committed criminal negligence and made several violations of the Civil Association Authority’s (CAA) license during the operation of Boeing 737–236 aircraft.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar conducted hearing of the case regarding the nonpayment of compensation to the victim families of Bhoja Air’s plane that crashed at Islamabad in 2012. The report stated that Bhoja Air had requested CAA to grant permission to fly Boeing 737-236 without Airworthiness Certificate.
It further added that the aircraft was not approved to carry passengers and it initiated its operations without meeting CAA’s legal requirement.
The report read that the plane staff did not have training to handle the emergency situation such as analyzing weather condition, adding that the pilot was also not experienced enough to fly a commercial carrier.
The report contended that due to all these factors, on April 24, 2012, the airline’s flight 213 crashed during landing at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport, killing all 146 passengers and six crew members on board.
The Bhoja Air’s counsel informed the court that all victim families had been paid their compensations. However, the counsel of affectees drew the court’s attention towards the fact that one of the accused nominated in the incident’s FIR is out on bail.
The bench directed Investigation Officers to complete their probe within six weeks in case and present case challan before court.
The top court directed that cases against those who were out on bail should be decided within a month. The report of the federal government has been made a part of the court’s proceeding.
The hearing has been adjourned till July 30.
