ABU DHABI: The crown prince of Abu Dhabi on Wednesday paid a public visit on Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, the son of Yemen's slain strongman and a potential successor.

A photo posted on Mohammed bin Zayed's Twitter account showed the Emirati sheikh offering condolences to Ahmed Saleh at his Abu Dhabi residence.

The Yemeni ex-president's son had been under house arrest in the United Arab Emirates since his father forged an alliance with Shiite Huthi rebels in 2014.

The UAE is a member of the Saudi-led military coalition which intervened in the Yemen war in 2015 with the aim of expelling the Huthis from Sanaa.

Huthi fighters killed their former ally Ali Abdullah Saleh on Monday, two days after he announced he was open to talks with the coalition.

The meeting between Saleh's son and the powerful Sheikh Mohammed -- who also serves as deputy commander of the Emirati armed forces -- raises the profile of the Yemeni politician, whose presence in the UAE was long kept quiet.
