imageKARACHI: Governor Sindh Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan has directed Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) to ensure proper supply of drinking water to Karachiites during summer and take action against theft of water from KW&SB lines with the help of police.

This he said while addressing at a meeting regarding the matters of KW&SB at Governor House here today. Commissioner Karachi Syed Asif Haider Shah, Managing Director KW&SB Mr. Misbah uddin Farid, Additional I.G Karachi Mr. Mushtaq Mehar and Deputy Commissioner East Mr. Asif Jan Siddiqui were also present during the meeting.

Governor Sindh also directed for repair and replacement of dilapidated lines so as to control line losses and conserve precious potable water for the citizens. The KW&SB should chalk out a viable strategy in this regard as there was a forecast of severe hot weather during summers, he added.

He also directed for judicious distribution of water to all parts and localities of Karachi as there were many complaints of non supply of water from different parts of the city. The free water tanker service should also be made more effective as low-income people were benefiting from this service, he further directed.

He also directed for regulating water tanker service and directed for action against water tankers providing water on excessive rates. The contractors of hydrants should be clearly warned that if any hydrant contractor found involved in such practice stern action would be initiated against him, he added.

He said that with the completion of K-IV water projects sizeable additional water would available for Karachi and KW&SB should plan a comprehensive strategy for the distribution of the same.

Managing Director KW&SB Mr. Misbah uddin Farid informed Governor Sindh that the Board was managing 11 hydrants in the city which were 24 during last year. KW&SB has also closed down 190 illegal hydrants operating in Karachi, he added.

Mr. Farid also informed that only 3% of total supply of water to Karachi is from water tankers. The main users of water tankers are industries and the residents of DHA, he added.

He said that KW&SB has also disconnected illegal filling points at hydrants which were not sanctioned while the working hours of hydrants have also been reduced to 12 from 24.
