LOS ANGELES: Animated flick "Puss in Boots" topped the weekend movie earnings in a strong debut, taking in $34.1 million at the North American Box Office, industry data showed Monday.
Featuring the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, and Billy Bob Thornton, it knocked "Paranormal Activity 3" off number one, with the latter taking in $18.1 million, monitor Exhibitor Relations reported.
Futuristic thriller "In Time" starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried entered the list in third place, earning $12.1 million in ticket sales between Friday and Sunday.
A remake of the hit 1980s dance romp "Footloose" slipped to fourth, with a haul of $5.5 million, putting it ahead of "The Rum Diary," starring Johnny Depp as a journalist facing an ethical conundrum in Puerto Rico, with $5.1 million.
The boxing robots of "Real Steel" was in sixth, with the Disney hit for children starring Hugh Jackman taking in $4.8 million.
A 3-D reimagination of the "Three Musketeers" was in seventh spot with $3.5 million, while political thriller "The Ides of March," starring George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, earned $2.8 million in eighth place.
"Moneyball," a sports drama starring Brad Pitt as a baseball coach, was in the number nine spot, taking in $2.4 million.
"Courageous," a story about four policemen whose confidence at work struggles to be equaled by their skills at home, rounded out the top 10, earning $1.8 million.
