JOHANNESBURG: A pattern of home victories in the CAF Super Cup continued on Saturday when Algerians Entente Setif defeated Egyptians Al Ahly 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
It was the 18th time in 20 matches that the CAF Champions League title-holders have used home advantage to win the one-off game.
Since 2004 the African champions have hosted the winners of the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup. Previously, they met the African Cup Winners Cup title-holders.
Abdelmalek Ziaya scored on 70 minutes at Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida, 45 kilometres south of Algiers, to put Setif ahead.
But veteran Ahly striker Emad Meteb levelled three minutes into stoppage time and forced a penalty shootout.
Extra time is not played in the CAF Super Cup.
Success was worth $75,000 (66,000 euros) to Setif and the Ahly bank balance got a $50,000 boost.
Setif lifted the trophy at the first attempt while record six-time winners Ahly were losing a Super Cup match for only the second time.
