imageKARACHI: The administrative judge of Anti-Terrorism Court on Monday extended the physical remand of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader and former petroleum minister, Dr Asim Hussain, in police's custody for seven days in terrorists' treatment case.

Dr Asim was brought before the administrative judge of Anti-Terrorism Court Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto under tight security after the expiry of his four-day remand. The investigation officer of Police requested the court to extend his physical remand as he is required for further interrogation in respect to providing treatment to terrorists.

Meanwhile, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) also approached the court to obtain the custody of Dr Asim for questioning him regarding embezzlement case. NAB requested the court to grant Dr Asim's remand in their custody, the court while rejecting NAB's request directed them to investigate Dr Asim in police's custody.

Earlier on Wednesday, an FIR was registered against Dr Asim at North Nazimabad police station under Anti-Terrorism Act after the Rangers handed over him to police.

The FIR accused Dr Asim of providing medical facilities to terrorists and wanted criminals belonging to a political party and notorious Lyari gang war bandits in two branches of Ziauddin Hospital, owned by him. The FIR said that Dr Asim made illegal appointments and granted contracts on bribes during his tenure as Petroleum Minister.

Dr Asim remained in Rangers' detention for 90 days under section 11 EEEE Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 over his alleged involvement in corruption and offences related to terrorism. The Rangers had told ATC that they had credible information about Dr Asim's involvement in offences falling within the ambit of Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
