HONG KONG: Hong Kong shares closed 0.16 percent lower on Tuesday following a late sell-off despite a strong rally on Wall Street that was spurred by hopes for a deal to avert a US fiscal crisis.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index eased 33.78 points to end at 21,228.28 on turnover of HK$48.52 billion ($6.26 billion).
Chinese shares closed down 0.40 percent. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.40 percent, or 8.06 points, to 2,008.92 on turnover of 33.4 billion yuan ($5.4 billion).
