wheat 400KIEV: Ukraine has started winter wheat sowing for the 2013 harvest, seeding the first 241,000 hectares, the Agriculture Ministry said on Friday.

The ministry said in a report farms planned to sow a total of 6.605 million hectares of winter wheat this year. Ukraine sowed 6.7 million hectares of winter wheat for the 2012 crop, which has been slashed by bad weather.

Analyst UkrAgroConsult said this week Ukraine was due to start the sowing of winter grains because almost all regions had optimum moisture content.

The ministry has said the former Soviet republic plans to sow a total of 8.1 million hectares in 2013 winter grains, wheat and barley, which is about 2.5 percent less than in 2012.

The ministry said farms would sow 1.221 million hectares for barley and 318,000 hectares for rye this year.

Ukraine has already completed the 2012 wheat harvest at 16.3 million tonnes bunker weight. It also harvested 7.2 million tonnes of barley bunker weight in 2012.

The wheat harvest totalled 22.3 million tonnes in 2011 while the output of barley reached 9.1 million tonnes.
