Pakistan on Wednesday decided to allow the Afghanistan-bound cargo trucks and containers thrice a week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday - from tomorrow (Friday) on "humanitarian grounds".

"Responding to Afghanistan government's special request, and based on humanitarian considerations, it has been decided to facilitate movement of cargo trucks and containers to cross-over into Afghanistan through Torkham and Chaman border crossing points thrice a week (on Monday, Wednesday and Friday) from 10 April, 2020 onwards," said Foreign Office spokesperson Aisha Farooqui.

She said that the step was being taken following consultations and coordination between both sides as per agreed upon protocols.

"As a neighbour and in view of fraternal relations, Pakistan remains in abiding solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, particularly at this time of global pandemic," she said.

The border crossings with Afghanistan have been closed as part of the government strategy to contain the novel coronavirus, besides the country's border with Iran.

Earlier on April 4, the Government of Pakistan decided to allow the exit of Afghan nationals in Pakistan, wishing to go back to their country.

On the Afghan government's request, the Government of Pakistan announced that the Torkham and Chaman land border crossings will be opened for a specific period from 6th April to 9th April, 2020, to facilitate Afghan nationals in returning to their homes.
