  • The peace deal between the United States and Afghan Taliban will be signed on February 29 in Doha.
  • Qureshi said Pakistan and Qatar have played a pivotal role in furthering the Afghan reconciliation process.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was invited by Qatar’s ambassador to Pakistan Saqr bin Mubarak Al-Mansouri to attend the signing ceremony of the peace deal between the United States and Afghan Taliban.

In a meeting on Tuesday at the Foreign Office, Qatar’s ambassador to Pakistan extended the invitation to the FM to attend the ceremony on February 29 in Doha. The minister said Pakistan and Qatar have played a pivotal role in furthering the Afghan reconciliation process.

Last week, the US and the Taliban announced they were set to sign a historic agreement in Doha. The peace deal if signed will mark a historic step in more than 18 years of gruelling conflict in Afghanistan. The agreement could represent a chance for peace and a pullout of thousands of US troops that have been in the country since 2001.
