Gandhi’s ashes stolen, ‘traitor’ scrawled on his poster on 150th birthday

• Thieves also wrote 'traitor' on Gandhi's photos before fleeing with Gandhi's ashes.

The ashes of Mahatma Gandhi have been stolen and his photograph defaced with ‘traitor’ scrawled on it in green paint on his 150th birth anniversary.

The remains of Gandhi had been kept in Bapu Bhawan memorial since 1948. The caretaker of the memorial Mangaldeep Tiwari said that he had opened the gates on the leader’s birthday. The caretaker said that upon his return, he found the mortal remains of Gandhi missing and his poster defaced.

Leader of the local Congress political party Gurmeet Singh filed a complaint and police are investigating the theft on the grounds of actions 'prejudicial to national integration' and potential breach of the peace, international media reported.

Singh urged the police to check the CCTV cameras installed inside the memorial. "This madness must stop," Singh urged.
