The Opposition would raise today (Tuesday) the issues of cancellation of standing committees meetings, price hike, national economic situation, proposal of amendment in rules for production order, and arrest of opposition party leaders in the National Assembly. The speaker National Assembly has summoned the session of the Lower House of the Parliament today (Tuesday).
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and member of the National Assembly (MNA), Abdul Qadir Patel while talking to Business Recorder said that the Opposition is expected to raise the issue of cancellation of meetings of standing committees of the House, amendment in rule-108 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly 2007 about production order and tsunami of inflation in the country in the coming session of the National Assembly.
He said that the speaker has given directions to hold meetings of the standing committees during the session of the National Assembly which is not possible. He said that there are 35 standing committee of the House and only five rooms are available for their meetings. He said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government will have to face the problem of quorum to run the House if the meetings of the standing committee are held during the session.
The PPP leader said that time is needed for thorough discussion on the bills in the meetings of the standing committees.
Answering a question, he said it seems after this step (cancellation of meetings of standing committees), the government is not serious in legislation process. He said that Budget-2019-20, two money bills and one another bill were approved from the Parliament during almost one year of the PTI government.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former Minister for Planning, Development and Reform, Ahsan Iqbal told this correspondent that the opposition would raise the issues of price hike, worst economic situation, arrest of party leader Rana Sanaullah and cancellation of meetings of standing committee of the House in the session.
When asked about the government's proposal for amendment in rule -108 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly 2007 about production order, he said that PTI could not do as its allies Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) and Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) are not ready to amend the rule.
The PML-N leader said the country is facing serious economic crisis. He said that lives of the people are in miserable condition due to increasing inflation. In a major move at night on July 8, 2019, Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaisar cancelled all the meetings of standing committees and sub-committees and directed that all meetings shall only be held during sessions of the National Assembly. Both Asif Ali Zardari and senior leader of the PML-N Khawaja Saad Rafique are members of the five standing committees each.
