The NAB chairman seems to have made an interesting argument by saying that those who had been in power for 30 years would be audited first followed by those who had been in power for a few months. "NAB does not believe in political revenge and neither does it want to be involved in politics. Our job is to eliminate corruption from the country. NAB as an institution is trying to take every step possible to eliminate corruption," he has been quoted as saying.
In December last year, the PILDAT president in a newspaper article highlighted the fact that "like free and fair elections, a fair system of accountability has also remained elusive in Pakistan."
The incumbent chairman of NAB is required to make every possible effort towards turning NAB into a credible mechanism of accountability. His argument, unfortunately, gives birth to a question whether or not the institution that he heads is being interrupted by political exigencies. The NAB chairman will always be required to demonstrate through his actions that he and his team members are accountable only to truth and not to those who wield power.
