Federal government has released Rs 6.154 billion and Rs 3.871 billion so far for Green Line Bus Rapid Transit project and Karachi Package, respectively, during the current financial year. In Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) for 2018-19, federal government allocated Rs 8.792 billion for Green Line Bus project and Rs 5 billion for Karachi Package.
Federal Government is funding the two projects in Karachi from its own resources. Green Line Bus project is part of mass-transit projects to resolve public transport issue. The previous PML-N's government had launched this project. That government also had announced Rs 25 billion Karachi Package on the demand of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-P) that had voted in favour of Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in the election of prime minister after Nawaz Sharif's ouster under a court ruling.
Under Karachi Package, the development projects in infrastructure and social areas have been planned in the city which now facing huge infrastructure problems due to negligence of incumbent federal, provincial and city agencies.
However, federal government also released Rs 344.800 million for Greater Karachi Sewerage Plant (S-III) Karachi out of Rs 862 million earmarked in the current financial year's PSDP. But, government hasn't released a single penny so far for the Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme (K-IV). Rs 600 million were allocated for this project in PSDP. The project is being carried out jointly by federal and Sindh governments on 50/50 cost sharing.
The government released Rs 500 million for establishment of combined effluent treatment plant for industrial areas out of 1000 million, set aside in PSDP as part of its thirty-three percent share in the project. In education sector, government released full amount of Rs 50 million, earmarked in PSDP for construction of hostel and academic infrastructure in Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto University of Law.
Likewise, Rs 200 million allocated for Development of Sindh Madrasatul Islam Campus education has been released. Rupees 75 million released for improving academic facilities at University of Karachi. Similarly, government released full amount of Rs 238.55 million allocated in PSDP for establishment of National Facility for Laboratory Animal Research & Care HEJ at University of Karachi. Government released full amount of Rs 30 million earmarked for strengthening of Dawood University of Science and Technology. Government released Rs 7 million out of Rs 10 million, allocated in the PSDP of current fiscal year for installation and operation of municipal waste water treatment plant at peripheral area of Mazar-e-Quaid.
